The Homer Brain

Does your brain feel like this?

I was reading a new study this morning that shows Chiropractic adjustments have been found to improve creative thinking.  Like many people, there are times I feel like I am losing my creative edge.  That has led me to wonder why that happens as we age – because we have more experiences to draw upon and more time to hone our creative talents.  But we also have more demands on our time, more worries, more stress.

If you have ever heard me talk about stress before, then you know that it puts your body into a survival “fight-or-flight” mode.  When in survival mode, a part of your brain called the cerebral cortex is shut down.

The cerebral cortex is responsible for memory, reasoning, and the ability to think abstractly.  It makes sense that if you are being chased by a tiger, thinking abstractly isn’t your body’s number one priority!

When I’ve been under stress, I have had bursts of creativity following chiropractic adjustments.  As my body let the stored tension and stress go, I was able to think more clearly and abstractly.  This is exactly what was found in a pilot study in the Chiropractic Journal of Australia:

Chiropractic adjustments may enhance creativity and divergent thinking. Subjects between 10 and 62 years of age were assessed for subluxation (stress affecting the nervous system) and adjusted. Performance on the ‘alternate uses test’ was done before and immediately after one adjustment. The majority of subjects were found to have enhanced scores on the test following the adjustment.1

While this is a pilot study, there are big implications to how this can affect your wellness.  So if you need a little more pep in your step or spark in your mind, an adjustment may be just what your body needs to take it to the next level.

Dr. Cole
