Have You Been Wrecked?
Wrecked is one of those books that can change you, if you let it. I’d go as far as say it’s a must read.
Why?
The message within it’s pages is quite literally the opposite of the way our culture lives. As the book starts making you uncomfortable, you begin to understand why – it is speaking directly to the heart of humanity:
- What gives meaning to my life?
- How can I make a difference?
- What is my purpose?
You may not like the answer. Jeff says “there is something important about a life full of moments that tear us apart and break our hearts and help us understand our purpose. We think it’s about self-actualization, about becoming the best version of ourselves. It’s not, It’s about losing ourselves.” [to see deeper discussion on this, check out my interview with Jeff here]
This “losing of yourself” is becoming Wrecked. Changed. Compelled to act on behalf of others. In the book, Jeff shares his stories of being wrecked – and you see that it is a tension that he lives in and necessarily shapes his worldview. When he states “I was tired of choosing not to see what everyone else didn’t see, ” you feel his sincerity and urgency as you are reflecting on those same moments in your life. The moments where you saw needs and ignored them.
Have you become comfortably numb?
This question is at the heart of Wrecked. Do you try to dull the discomfort of not doing enough? Do you see needs at a distance and ignore them? Judge them? Possibly even condemn them?
There’s a line in Wrecked that says “…if we practice ignorance long enough, we don’t notice the need anymore.”
I think we’ve all been there. I know I have. Dismissing a situation for the sake of my own comfort. If it sounds ugly, it’s because it is. Reading this book is like a good hard look in the mirror – to remember that “living only for yourself gets you exactly what you already have.”
An adventure is not an end to itself…
Wrecked goes on to give practical wisdom to those who are wandering and those whose hearts have calloused. It speaks on seasons of life, importance of daily commitments, and having faith in a deeper narrative.
And my favorite part – “an adventure is not an end to itself, but a means to something bigger.” Embrace the part of the journey you are in, open your eyes to the world around you, and you too will be Wrecked.
Don’t wait to pick it up.
